Published this week, Case investigation and reactive case detection for malaria elimination in northern Senegal reports the findings of a 12 week malaria case investigation pilot program in Richard Toll district of northern Senegal. After investigating malaria infections in this district, it was found that travel is the primary risk factor for malaria infection.

Conference highlights advances in P. vivax research

The majority of malaria cases are caused by two parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. P. falciparum most commonly causes malaria in humans and is thus the main target of malaria elimination efforts. Because the behavior of P. falciparum is easier to understand from a biological perspective, it is easier to control and treat, and there has been significant global progress in controlling the parasite.

A Promise Renewed progress report calls for increased commitment to end preventable child deaths

A new UNICEF report, Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed, Progress Report 2013, shows that, despite impressive gains, we are significantly behind schedule to reach the fourth Millennium Development Goal: to reduce by two thirds, by 2015, the under-five mortality rate. Progress must be accelerated, or the world will not meet this goal until 2028.
